Pool of Night

from Painting The New Night by The Dye

/

about

This song was inspired by the French film La Piscine and Arthur RImbaud’s The Drunken Boat. Both works of art involve murder at the beginning and then unravel into masterpieces of their own. The Dye’s tune is tied to the realms of the subconscious with surrealist scenes that create a dreamscape. Imagery such as “laying on the moon surrounding the sound” creates a state of being where one can abandon reality even beyond the effects of sound and image. Intoxicated by the beauty of existence and the thought of aimless liberty is freeing for the soul. Obtaining independence from societal control and authority figures through adolescent rebellion is a hidden theme of “Pool of Night”. In the chorus “Run run run run..Run away …when the rain dissolves the pain” expresses the longing of youth to escape into the pool of mature experience. The final line of the chorus “Red Rivers remind you of the tide that binds the rain” alludes to the idea of a massive turning point with the images of red waters, or blood flowing through rivers. The concepts of war and murder are suggested here. It is actually the will to break away from the confinements of parental authority with the ambition to carve our own identity, the central idea from that lyric.
